World Around Songs started as the Cooperative Recreation Service almost a hundred years ago. Its founders believed that through “recreation” - singing, play-party games, and folk dances - that they could provide a fun and wholesome outlet to unite different local communities. Likewise, with the folk songs they collected from all over the world from their friends and acquaintances, they sought to bring people together from all different cultures (in peace and understanding) by having them sing each others’ songs. The founders, Lynn and Katherine Rohrbough, toured throughout North America, teaching and collecting more songs, games, and dances; they successfully published dozens of songbooks, distributing them throughout the world. When the founders became older in the 1970s, they handed the songbook company over to different interested parties. In 2021, Old Time fiddler Bruce Greene of Yancey County, North Carolina sold the company to Brian Dolphin and Jalopy Records. We are happy to keep the legacy and vision of these songbooks alive by getting these songbooks into the hands of people who will sing these traditional songs and dance these traditional dances together.
